Design student Liva Cabule is runner up in a prestigious book cover design competition that attracted more than 700 entries worldwide.
Liva, who studies Illustration at the University of Bedfordshire in Luton, discovered she had come second in the Puffin children’s section of the Penguin Books Design Award 2011 at the awards ceremony in London on June 23rd.
Entrants had to use their imagination to design a cover for Roald Dahl’s iconic book James and the Giant Peach, which celebrates its 50th birthday this year. The winner, from Hamberg, received £1,000 and a four-week work placement with Puffin Books.

As runner up, Liva received £350 for her design, which used the moon to symbolize Jame’s hopes and dreams. The book cover received glowing praise from the judges, who included the wife of Roald Dahl and Puffin’s Art Director.
Judge Felicity Dahl said of Liva’s design: “What the book is about is his friends – and there they are!”
Anna Billson, Art Director for Penguin Children’s books, said: “A well-executed and original concept that gives the book a whole different look. Intriguing and appealing.”
Liva read the classic book and then set about using her creativity to make her design stand out from others on the shelf.
“I did not want to characterize heroes because it would destroy the children's own imagination, so I just created silhouettes of them. I was playing with lights, shadows and paper cut-outs to give a better feeling of the moon night,” explained Liva.
Noel Douglas, Senior Lecturer in Design for Communication at the University, added: “Penguin have a long history of supporting and using design and illustration in their publications, and to come second is both a testimony to Liva's talent and a great achievement for the course.”
