Bulldozers on Vicarage Street at the University of Bedfordshire herald the demolition of Europa House, home of the Students' Union (SU) for the last 30 plus years.
By the end of July the site will be reduced to a pile of rubble to make way for the latest building development at the University’s Luton campus – a £20m Postgraduate and Continuing Professional Development Centre, due for completion in early 2013.

In a sentimental journey down memory lane several members of the current SU staff recently returned to the site in hard hats to say good bye. Among them was Linda Carter, the SU’s Finance and Admin Manager.
Linda has worked in the SU since 1987. Afterwards she said: “It brought back many happy memories. I met many wonderful people while working here. I had a lump in my throat seeing Europa House being knocked down.”
Before joining the team at the SU Linda was a student back in 1967 at the former Luton College of Technology. Linda remembers: “I took a shorthand and typing course on day release.”
Work will soon begin on the site for the new Postgraduate and CPD Centre. The Centre is designed to cater for increasing demand in postgraduate courses at the University.
For many years the old building was the home of the SU with its bar and famous SubClub hosting numerous memorable student nights. The SU is now housed in the Campus Centre at the University’s Luton campus.
So as this iconic building leaves the Luton skyline what memories do you have? Was it mad parties, brilliant new bands or crazy student theme nights? Whatever, we’d love to hear about them. Let us know at alumni@beds.ac.uk or write to Ian Nancollas, Alumni Relations Manager, University of Bedfordshire.
