The University of Bedfordshire has welcomed the decision by the Office for Fair Access (OFFA) to accept its proposed fees and access arrangements for entry in 2012/13.
The University’s Access Agreement sets out its commitment to giving excellent support to both new students and those already registered.
Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE, said: “We are delighted that OFFA has accepted our proposed Access Agreement which demonstrates our commitment to fair access for new students at the same time as supporting retention among our current students.
“We have always had the best interests of our students at heart and have been among the most generous universities in offering bursaries and scholarships to those most in need of financial support. We aim to continue to uphold those values as part of this new Agreement.
“We have a long-standing commitment to our partnerships with schools and further education colleges and will continue to build on those relationships so that those young people who aspire to go on to higher education are supported and encouraged to do so.
“We are also fully committed to helping our current students achieve success while they are here and that they are given every opportunity and support to maximise their life chances for the future.
“We already have a strong employability record – 90 per cent of our graduates are either in work and/or further study six months after graduating – and we will continue to make career success and employability a key focus of the learning experience here.”
Under the Agreement the University will charge £6,000 for its Foundation Degrees and £9,000 for its undergraduate courses starting in 2012 with pro rata fees for part-time students.
A generous package of measures to support students most in need of financial help has also been agreed to enable more people from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue higher education.
The university will provide a start-up scholarship worth between £1,000 and £3,000 for students with a family income of less than £25,000*. It will establish a fund to support the progression of students from further education colleges with links to the University and will provide financial support to all students leaving public care.
It will establish an ambitious programme to promote access to higher education – to increase social mobility by enabling those from disadvantaged backgrounds to go to university, achieve success and obtain rewarding employment.
OFFA is an independent, non-departmental public body. Its role is to promote and safeguard fair access to higher education for lower income and other under-represented groups.
