University of Bedfordshire student nurses and midwives were among those putting patients and carers at the centre of nursing and midwifery practice at a recent conference hosted by Ann Keen, chair of the Prime Minister’s Commission.
The conference, called 'Leadership Matters', was held in the University’s new Campus Centre in Luton and a range of staff, students and local health workers came along to hear from UK healthcare experts.
In 2009-2010, Ann led the Prime Minister's independent commission on the future of nursing and midwifery in England, which resulted in the report ‘Front Line Care’. Her opening lecture at the conference looked at the Commission, its task and the Government’s response.
Health professionals speaking at the prestigious event included Professor Dickon Weir-Hughes, Chief Executive and Registrar at the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Steve Jamieson, Head of Nursing at the Royal College of Nursing, Katherine Murphy, Chief Executive of the Patients Association and Professor Mike Cook from the East of England Strategic Health Authority.
Local experts were also on hand from Bedford, Luton, Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire. The day-long conference included lectures, workshops and a ‘question-time’ panel.
The busy event concluded with Ann considering the way forward for nursing and midwifery and an address from the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Les Ebdon CBE.
He said: “It was a real privilege to have Ann with us and it’s an invaluable opportunity for our nursing and midwifery students to be learning from so many experienced and influential health professionals.”
