Summer school 2011

Local sixth formers interested in media studies stepped up to the mic with Channel Four news at a University of Bedfordshire summer school.

More than 100 sixth form students enjoyed a three day summer school at the University, which coincided with a Channel Four interview with Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE.

The news team asked to speak to students for their slot and around 20 media students were happy to oblige. They said: “It was great to see how the media really works and some of us were actually on the news that night – it was really exciting.” The media students also got the chance to use the University’s radio facilities and work on some animation.

Other students were part of planned hands-on activities. Sport Science students used the new, state-of-the-art, £8 million Sport Science labs at the University’s Bedford campus in order to test their own fitness and against each other.

Those interested in Biomedical Science did everything from imitating CSI agents to extracting DNA from defenceless strawberries, and Health and Social Care students were exposed to a practical lesson in nursing which was rounded off with a sneak-preview of the University’s new, unopened simulation skills nursing ward and operating theatre.

It was also a valuable insight into what university life is really like for the teenagers. Afterwards 80 per cent agreed that the summer school had made them more confident about pursuing higher education.

Steve Kendall, Director of Widening Participation at the University said: “Events like this summer school show young people that university can be really exciting and extremely diverse whilst giving them a realistic introduction to higher education.

“It is crucially important that we continue to show that university could be the best career move these students ever take, especially for those who might not ordinarily consider higher education.”

Trevor Sinclair, a Higher Education Progression Officer for the University and key-organiser of the Sports Science event said: “This year’s event was by far the best one ever. The session content, academic input, student participation and impact were all very impressive.”
