Award winners at the STAN conference

University of Bedfordshire computing students recently hosted their first Security, Telecommunications and Networking Conference (STAN 2011) at the Luton campus.

The one-day conference was organised by the University’s Student Branch, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and sponsored by Luton based company RoboTraders.

The conference showcased recent student projects undertaken by third-year undergraduates and postgraduate students in the University’s Department of Computer Science and Technology (CST). Topics included Geographical Information Systems for a global DNA Database and Application of J2ME in Field Biological Practices.

Guest speakers Peter Gunther and Mick Garrett from RoboTraders presented an overview of their company’s research and design work in the motor manufacture and aerospace industries along with current graduate opportunities at RoboTraders.

Peter and Mick also presented award certificates to all the student presenters plus five special student awards at the conference finale.

Dr Gregory Epiphaniou, a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Technology and Chair of the Conference Organising Committee said:

“The quality of student presentations has been excellent and demonstrates how their ideas and course learning can be applied in the real world.”

The Student Branch was established last year. Kesiena Chris-Iwuru, Chair of Student Branch said: “I’m delighted with the progress the Student Branch has made over the past year. In addition to our regular seminars, we have an active and growing student membership, have established a mentoring programme and are continually building up contacts with industry.

“Building on the success of this year’s conference, the Student Branch aims to invite national and international speakers to attend future seminars and to next year’s annual conference.”

Student presenters at the conference included: Alexandru Apostol, Alka Bajracharya, Amol Bakane, Bikesh Vaidya, Gopinath Muralikrishnan, Jyoti Khanal, Mohamed E. Hashish, Rajankumar Patel, Reetinder Sidhu, Suleiman Zakari N, Terence Cutler and Tolulope Ogundipe

Conference Special Award Winners were:

  • Gopinath Muralikrishnan: Best Abstract
  • Mohamed E. Hashish: Best Paper
  • Bikesh Vaidya: Best Poster
  • Tolulope Ogundipe: STAN 2011 Sponsor’s Choice Award
  • Rakesh Satheesh Rakhev: IEEE Member Award for significant contribution to the Student Branch
