Dr Yue Zhang, a senior lecturer based in the University of Bedfordshire’s Department of Computer Science and Technology, has won the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Industrial Secondment Scheme Award.
The Industrial Secondment Scheme, which includes a £17,000 award to the University, provides an invaluable opportunity for an engineering academic to gain industrial experience.
Open to engineers of all disciplines, the scheme aims to enable secondees to share the results of this experience to their students through teaching, case studies, course design and further research collaboration.
Dr Zhang, who has a career background in radio frequency and intermediate frequency digital subsystem design and digital signal processing engineering, will start a one-year secondment with Aeroflex International Ltd later this year.
Aeroflex, based in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, is internationally renowned in the development of electronic design technology. Dr Zhang’s secondment will involve developing next generation wireless systems. Aeroflex plans to introduce a new product line as a direct result of this collaborative research project.
Dr Zhang said: “This is the first time the University of Bedfordshire has achieved this distinction for what is a highly coveted industrial secondment award from the Royal Academy of Engineering. Academics from universities across the UK compete for the award each year.
“This is an exciting opportunity for me to learn the latest developments in advanced electronics design in wireless systems with Aeroflex. I hope this is the first step in longer-tem research projects and consultancy collaborations between the University and Aeroflex, and helps develop further links between the University and the electronics industry.
“Ultimately, this project will help keep my skills up to date, directly deliver these skills to students on the BEng courses and bring further research projects to the University.”
