World Cup referee to be awarded at Bedford ceremony

Personalities from the worlds of sport and education will join hundreds of University of Bedfordshire students at graduation ceremonies next week.

The graduation ceremonies for the University’s Bedford campus are taking place on Monday and Tuesday (11-12 July) at the Corn Exchange in St Paul’s Square.

Students are mainly drawn from the Faculty of Education, Sport and Tourism, although all four faculties will be represented at one of the ceremonies.

The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon CBE, said: “Our students have worked incredibly hard to get this far and I congratulate each and every one of them for remaining focused and dedicated throughout.

“I wish them every success for the future whether they are entering the world of work or going on to postgraduate study.”

Seven honorary degrees are also being awarded over the two days. Premier League and a FIFA-listed referee Howard Webb MBE (pictured right) will be presented with an Honorary Doctor of Science in recognition of his outstanding contribution to football and contribution to officiating in sport.

Baroness Sue Campbell CBE will receive an Honorary Doctor of Arts in recognition of her outstanding services to British sport. In a distinguished career, Baroness Campbell has served as Chair of UK Sport since 2003 and has played a pivotal role in the success of Team GB at the last two Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Others being awarded are:

  • Physical education consultant Dr Margaret Whitehead, in recognition of her distinguished services to teaching and research in physical education.
  • Retired Chief Probation Officer for Bedfordshire, Miss Paddy Barrett in recognition of her outstanding contribution to voluntary and charitable work in Bedfordshire.
  • Leading figure in English cricket and former chairman of the England Test selectors Mr David Graveney in recognition of outstanding contribution to cricket and administration within the sport.
  • Professor Frank Coffield in recognition of his outstanding contribution to lifelong learning and educational research and practice. Professor Coffield is currently Emeritus Professor of Education at the Institute of Education, University of London.
  • One of the UK’s most influential sports medics Dr Mike Loosemore, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to sports medicine.
