Midwifery students at the University of Bedfordshire were treated to a series of talks from maternity care professionals during a conference held at the University.
More than 150 students attended the day of talks at the University’s Luton campus which gave all midwifery students the valuable opportunity to hear from a range of expert speakers.
The conference brought in a host of external speakers, and was designed to demonstrate the importance of working together in maternity care.
Among the speakers was Jenny Moody MBE, founder of Luton Women’s Aid, whose talk was entitled “In the mind of an abused woman, what do we provide?”
The breadth of maternity care was further demonstrated by Penelope Conway, Senior Tutor in the Expectant Mother's Clinic at the British School of Osteopathy - a partner institution of the University.
Other speakers included Sarah Hall, Safeguarding Midwife from the Luton and Dunstable Hospital, Mrs Suzy Adacen, Senior Midwife, and Miss Naomi Gallagher, Head of Midwifery and Supervisor of Midwives at Bedford Hospital NHS Trust and Elizabeth Bradley, Chaplain at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital.
Other speakers from the University looked at how midwives work together with neonatal nurse practitioners and health visitors.
Bella Madden, Academic Director of the Pre-Registration Midwifery Courses, was at the event. She said: “The conference was a very good opportunity for our students to learn together as one group, and from a range of practitioners whose work within midwifery and maternity care connects with theirs.
"This is our third student conference, and we aim to hold two a year. Our next conference, later this year, will look at the needs of vulnerable patient groups in maternity care.”
The day ended with a reflective performance from a group of students which included poetry, sketches and music.
