Enterprising students at the University of Bedfordshire raised more than £1000 for local charities – all as part of their course.

The ‘Wonderland’ fair was organised by a group of MSc Project Management students in Luton, with the aim to put theory into practice to help the community.

The students drew on their classroom learning to plan, organise and run the day-long fair comprising games and stalls in Vicarage Street. A total of 28 students took part in the event, which raised more than £1,200 for five charities.

The charities benefiting from the event are Leonard Cheshire Disability, Friends of Bright Eyes, children’s charity Happy Days, Keech Hospice Care and the Anthony Nolan Trust.

Student Justyna Zaremba was one of the students organising the event. She said: “It was great to use our learning to plan and implement a real project, and a project that was such a success. It has been invaluable in developing our time management, risk management and team working skills.”

Dr David Owen, course leader, said: “This work supports our graduates' employability and raised a large amount of money for charity, making it a win-win project!”

At Luton there were 22 projects represented, including Keech Hospice Care, English Heritage and the Prince’s Trust, and in Bedford there were 14 projects to sign up to.

The Luton fair ran directly after a Going Professional conference event organised with the Department of Applied Social Studies, called ‘The Big Society and You’.

Local prize-winning student Sabath Shazia was on hand at the Friends of Bright Eyes stall, where she works as a Senior Care Worker. She said: “The event has gone really well and loads of people have signed up to support our work. It’s great to be able to promote volunteering to other students like this.”
