Rebecca Grant-Jones sings the National Anthem before the Great Britain's women's handball team beat Finland

University of Bedfordshire staff member Rebecca Grant-Jones sang the Great Britain's women's handball team to victory against Finland in the 2012 European Championships.

Rebecca was picked to sing the National Anthem to kick off the game at the National Sports Centre in Crystal Palace on Saturday, 4 June.

The team won 27-20 against Finland and now join World Champions Russia, Montenegro and Poland in group three of the 2012 Euro qualifiers.

Events co-ordinator Rebecca said: “It was a real honour to be asked and there was a great atmosphere at the game. I wish the girls all the best as they progress in the competition.”

Rebecca and the team were boosted by the attendance of the British Olympic Association's elite performance director, Sir Clive Woodward, who was taking in his first live handball match.

Professor John Brewer is Director of Sport at the University and also Chair of the British Handball Association. He recommended Rebecca for the part and said: “Rebecca sang before a vital match for the Great Britain’s women’s handball team, and it was clear that her rousing rendition of the National Anthem gave them exactly the motivation they needed before the game. I know the players really enjoyed Rebecca adding to the atmosphere and occasion.”
