Talented students get the camera rolling

Budding children’s television presenters demonstrated their skills and employability at the University of Bedfordshire’s TV studios in Luton’s Park Square recently.

The Level 2 Media Performance students starred in two children’s television programmes that were produced by Level 1 TV Production students. The joint project produced Summer Zone, a Blue Peter-style programme, and The Magic Hat, aimed at pre-school children.

Both shows were recorded as live shows and involved 25 student presenters. Some students were filmed on location, which included feeding the animals at Woodside Farm & Leisure Park, snowboarding at Xscape in Milton Keynes, and learning archery.

In the studio presenters customised summer hats, decorated T-shirts, created wooden spoon characters, performed a pre-school song and story, and interviewed a pet hamster and its owner!

In total 61 students were involved in the two shows that will form part of their assessments. The shows will be available on the University’s you tube sites.

Kathryn Wolfe, Course Leader TV Production and Senior Lecturer Media Performance, said: “The quality of the children’s assignment gets stronger each year, and these productions were particularly satisfying as two distinct programmes were made to target different age ranges.

“The key to successful programme production is to know your audience. In terms of TV presenting this is also important as presenters’ show reels are becoming more and more focused.”
