Double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes and her team of Olympians and world class athletes will put 120 talented young sports performers through their paces at the University of Bedfordshire on Wednesday, 29 June.
The group of young people have been invited to take part in Unlocking Potential, a special event organised by Dame Kelly’s charity, the DKH Legacy Trust, which will take place for the first time at the University’s Bedford Campus.
A team of elite sports performers, including six-time World Champion canoeist Anna Hemmings, will deliver a day of unique workshops for the youngsters from Bedford Academy, All Saints Academy, Barnfield South and Barnfield West Academies.
Sessions on the day will include circuit training, communicating with the media and mental skills training with the aim of inspiring young people to fulfil their potential in sport or in life. The circuits will be led by two-time rowing World Champion and Olympian Toby Garbett.
A series of workshops for the talented performers’ parents and carers are also part of the programme. The role of the parent is fundamental in the development of a young athlete.
Dame Kelly Holmes said: “Unlocking Potential will provide a great opportunity, to not only aspiring athletes, but also their parents, carers and coaches, to reach their goals in sport. The significance of learning from experienced international athletes cannot be underestimated; neither can parents’ and coaches’ roles. I know my mum and coach played a huge part in me getting to the podium in Athens. I am sure the young people will greatly benefit from the day.
“I am really excited about this event at the University of Bedfordshire. I know how much difference good role models can make to youngsters, which is why I wanted to set up this sort of programme with my charity, the DKH Legacy Trust. I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone.”
University of Bedfordshire Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE: “We were thrilled when we got the chance to become an associate sponsor of the DKH Legacy Trust and take part in this very special event.
“As a University we firmly believe everyone should have the opportunity to fulfil their potential and I am looking forward to welcoming so many local families to our Bedford campus to enjoy the fantastic facilities we have here.”
