Reducing carbon emissions has helped the University of Bedfordshire emerge as one of the highest climbers in the independent People & Planet Green League 2011.
The University of Bedfordshire was awarded a 2:1 in the League, which studied the environmental and ethical performance of 143 universities and scored them on performance. The University of Bedfordshire is ranked joint 53 in the league – up 71 places from the 2010 table and the third highest climbing institution. Overall winner was Nottingham Trent University.
Since last year the University has put in place a new environmental policy and auditing procedure, and set targets to reduce its environmental impacts, including the areas of transport, waste, water and emissions.

Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE said: “We are delighted that the University has significantly increased its green standing in this independent table, and we will continue to work to improve our environmental and ethical performance.”
“Over the past 18 months the University has made significant in-roads, especially in relation to the reduction of carbon emissions. The University has already invested £400,000 in carbon reduction projects above and beyond low/zero carbon technologies incorporated into our new campus buildings.
“This year will also see £250,000 investment in carbon reduction technologies and this significant investment should ensure the absolute and relative carbon emissions reduce year on year.”
A further £500,000 is being invested in more efficient heating systems in all student accommodation.
