A national project has been launched to look at the specific health needs of sexually exploited young people, from their perspectives.
The project, called ‘Be Healthy’, is run by the Association for Young People’s Health (AYPH) in partnership with the University of Bedfordshire and the National Working Group for Sexually Exploited Young People (NWG).
It is the first project of its kind – dedicated to better understanding the health needs of sexually exploited young people from across England – and has been funded by Comic Relief and Children in Need for two years.
The project trains and accredits young people as ‘health advocates’ who will create a website, leaflet and run workshops for other sexually exploited young people. ‘Health advocates’ will be equipped for paid work after completing the training.
Dr Jenny Pearce, Professor of Young People and Public Policy at the University of Bedfordshire said: “This project recognises that too often the health needs of sexually exploited young people have been overlooked. It is an exciting and innovative project supporting young people to play an active role in improving recognition of and responses to their health problems.”
Dr John Coleman OBE, AYPH Chair added: “This project is incredibly important in understanding the needs of sexually exploited young people. This funding will enable us to reach this vulnerable group, give them a voice and help them to reach others in the same situation.”
