Local teachers were given a valuable networking opportunity at the University of Bedfordshire when it held its first ever TeachMeet.

TeachMeets run across the UK, and are informal gatherings for teachers to gather and share ideas and good practice.

More than 50 local teachers from the University’s partner schools met at the Bedford campus to consider the use of ICT in teaching and learning at the free event.

TeachMeets are made up of short presentations given by teachers, round-table discussions and activity demonstrations. Anyone can share great ideas they have used in the classroom and the round-table discussions are an opportunity for teachers to show a small group an activity they have used or simply discuss an interesting issue.

TeachMeets are not limited to those who can make the journey – the whole event was streamed live on the internet so that as many teachers from the University’s partner schools could interact with each other.

The University’s first TeachMeet was organised by members of staff Charles Birtwisle and Heather McClue with help from Deborah Record at Vital. Vital is a professional development programme which aims to encourage teachers to use ICT to add value to their lessons and find new ways to engage their learners.

Charles said: “We’re really pleased with how our first TeachMeet went - some fantastic ideas were shared and the teachers all felt inspired to try them out in their own classrooms.

“It is great that the University is able to offer continuing professional development opportunities to our local teachers for free. We are definitely planning to hold more.”

The University is a large national provider of teacher training and the quality of its provision is based upon a long and established history of teacher education.

In the University’s recent Ofsted Inspection Report, it achieved outstanding grades and the report acknowledged the impact of the University’s partnership with schools and Further Education partners on the quality of its provision.

TeachMeet was run the University and by sponsored by Vital, Fluffy Clouds, Brain Pop UK, 2 Simple Software, E2BN, Primary Pad, Espresso Education and 4-learning Clipbank.
