A computer security expert from the University of Bedfordshire led an ethical hacking masterclass for Bedford College students.

Geraint Williams, Senior Lecturer and Infrastructure Manager at the University’s Computing and Information System Labs, shared his experiences and demonstrated ethical hacking techniques to a packed audience of staff and students from the College.

Organised by the University’s Aimhigher team, the workshop is part of a scheme to ease the transition between foundation degrees and undergraduate degrees.

More than 40 part-time and full-time students on the IT Networking and Security foundation degree course came along to see Geraint demonstrate the tools, social engineering techniques and operating system vulnerabilities that hackers make use of.

The masterclass was designed as an introductory session on computer hacking and security, and the main areas covered were phishing analysis, ethical hacking and wireless security, with a practical demonstration of hacking a computer.

Geraint said: “Bedford College has some excellent foundation degree level students who were interested in learning more about ethical hacking and security and my demonstrations provoked some thoughtful discussion.

“I was really impressed by their enthusiasm, interest and appreciation of the issues involved.”

Trevor Sinclair from Aimhigher added: “We really value our partnership with Bedford College, so it was fantastic to be able to suggest Geraint as an expert speaker. We hope that this is just the first of many talks which will help foundation degree students gain a better understanding of how they can progress – not just in education, but industry too.”
