Sporty students have been recognised and rewarded for their excellence, hard work and commitment at two awards ceremonies organised by the University of Bedfordshire Students’ Union.

The Athletics Union (AU) Awards, held last month at the Corn Exchange in Bedford and Auction House in Luton, awarded sport colours to students with nominations coming from fellow students, staff and sport coaches.

Top scorer and best player from each individual team, as voted for by their team mates, were rewarded for their success over the course of the season. There were also surprise awards, and a Vice Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Contribution to Sport.

This went to Lauren Impey, a Sport Science and Coaching final-year student from Bedford, and was presented by Director of Sport Professor John Brewer.

John said: "Lauren has made a contribution to sport at all levels within the University, having coached and played for the Women's Football team, and helped to promote sport through her role as a Students' Union Sports Officer from 2009 to 2011.

“In representing GB Universities at football, and heading the student volunteering team at the recent Champions League Final at Wembley, Lauren has been an advocate and ambassador for the University of Bedfordshire, and I am delighted that she has won this award.

Lauren added: “My achievements would not have been possible if it was not for the support from the Students' Union, as competing in sport can sometimes cost a lot of money, and I have been fortunate to have had support from the Students Union and the University through a scholarship.”

On the individual front Micheal Doyle, Irish International Race Walker, was awarded Full Colours in recognition of his growing success in local, national and international competition.

Martin Knight was awarded Half Colours for his success in developing dodgeball at the University, and for coaching the England Lions Dodgeball team at an international level. Antoe Walters was also awarded Half Colours for representing GB and England in the 60 metres, 100 metres, relay and also in the GB Junior Bobsleigh team. John Brewer added: "The AU awards are a chance to celebrate all that is good about sport at the University of Bedfordshire. It was great to see the successes of our individual's and teams being rewarded, and to witness the real pride and pleasure that the winners displayed. “Combining academic studies with sporting success is never easy, but our students have shown that they can represent their University with pride and success whilst gaining the qualifications they need to kick-start their future careers.” The Students' Union Sport Officers made surprise awards to Lauren Impey (Bedford Campus) and Suraj Krishna Kambli (Luton Campus), for their contribution to developing sport and representing student opinion at the University.

Ciaran O'Brien, Student Activities Manager, said: "Lauren and Raj have been fantastic ambassadors for University sport. Their enthusiasm and passion in developing sport has helped guide the way we deliver sport to ensure that our student wants and needs are met, and an excellent sporting experience is provided".
