The University of Bedfordshire’s dragon boat team competed in the Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival on Sunday (25 June) and came an oar-some eighth out of over 60 crews. The festival, now in its tenth year, saw the crews battle it out over the 200m race course in the gruelling heat at Willen Lake in Milton Keynes.

The crew, made up of University staff members and aptly named the ‘Polhill Piranhas’, undertook a number of training sessions at the lake in preparation for the festival. The captain, Martin Hargreaves, from the University’s AV and Media Services department said: “It was a great day and the weather really made it too. This was the first time we’d had a complete crew and I’m really proud of them. One of the team was even suffering with a cracked rib!”

Professor Marilyn Leask, Dean of the faculty of Education, Sport and Tourism at the Bedford campus added: “Dragon boat racing is one of the fastest growing water activities in Britain at the moment and the University proudly supports the two local events – the annual MK Dragon Boat Festival and the bi-annual Bedford River Festival where the team hope to claim back the championship title they won in 2008.”
