University of Bedfordshire experts have contributed to The Munro Review – a major national review of child protection.
The Munro Review was commissioned by Education Secretary Michael Gove, as part of a national drive to improve the quality of child protection services.
The work of two University experts was quoted in the review. Dr Donald Forrester, Director of the Tilda Goldberg Centre for Social Work and Social Care, was cited in the first of three reports - The Munro Review of Child Protection: Part One, A System’s Analysis.
This first review discussed the problems in the child protection system and how they have arisen. Dr Forrester’s work in the field of evidence-based practice, Is the Care System Failing Children?, was used in a section considering the experiences of children and young people who need child protection services.
Work by Patrick Ayre, Lecturer in Social Work at the University, was cited in the second, interim report. Patrick’s work, Child Protection and the Media: lessons from the last three decades, was used in this second review, looking at how the child’s journey can be refocused, from needing to receiving the right help. Patrick said: “It is very pleasing that our work is influencing developments in this important field.”
Another two experts were consulted in a series of professional groups. Professor Ivor Gaber and Professor Jon Silverman were part of a sub-group consulted on ‘Media and Public Confidence’.
The independent review of child protection in England is led by Professor Eileen Munro from the London School of Economics and Political Science. The final report is due in April 2011 and the recommendations will be passed to the Government.
