A charity head shave at the University of Bedfordshire has raised almost £1,000 – with more expected to roll in.
Julie Simmons, who is the Student Finance Officer at the Bedford campus, had her waist-length locks cut off for two cancer charities.
She has already raised more than £620 for Cancer Research UK and is two-thirds towards achieving her next target of £500 for the Bedford Hospital Gamma Camera Appeal.
The task was performed by an apprentice hairdresser, 19-year-old Rhea Parker of BROOKS Bedford College hair and beauty spa in High Street, Bedford.
Jayne Beard, chairman of the executive committee of the Bedford Hospitals Charity, was also there to offer her support.
Julie said: “I’ve no regrets about doing it and everybody has been so supportive and encouraging. The support on the day was tremendous and made it so enjoyable and worthwhile.

“I’m really pleased with the amount raised so far but there’s still time to make a donation to help me achieve £500 for our local hospital for a piece of equipment that will greatly help in the early diagnosis of cancer and other illnesses.
“Bedford College were great and Rhea did a superb job. Thanks to all the staff and students who have contributed and my colleagues who came to support me. I did it in tribute to all my friends and colleagues who have experienced this disease.
“My partner, Philip, is still getting used to my new look and my mum was a bit taken aback because she has always seen me with long hair. I’ve kept my plaits as a souvenir and reminder of the old me. The most noticeable difference is the strange sensation of the wind rustling through my 4mm hair.”
Julie, who lives in Aylesbury Road in Bedford, also works in the Bedford Tourist Information Centre on Saturdays.
The date of her head shave – Tuesday, 8 March – also marked the centenary of International Women’s Day.
