The University of Bedfordshire is sponsoring Luton businessman Partha Dey in his quest to climb Mount Everest next month (April).
Partha Dey, who runs the logistics business National Sameday, will also be carrying out climate change research supported by the University.
The businessman leaves for the Himilayas on 31 March and will be away until June with a team of five climbers who will approach Everest along the south- east ridge
Partha, who has studied a range of short courses at the University and is a founder member of the University’s Knowledge Network, will help in the research of global warming during his five week acclimatisation before the ascent scheduled in early May.
He said: “I am interested in glacial retreat and have been in touch with the British Geographical Survey to help compile contemporary records for their archive.
“The University is supporting me in this project and I am very grateful for their expertise in this area and for their help in making the trip happen.”
Partha will be interviewing older inhabitants to compile a record of what conditions were like in the past. These records will provide information on weather, timing of seasons, changes in vegetation, extent of glaciers etc going back over 50 years.
Professor Angus Duncan, Head of the Research Graduate School, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Partha in this project. Much of this information will not have been documented and would otherwise be lost as the older people progressively pass away.”
