The Vice Chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire has backed the Government’s rethink on student visas.
Professor Les Ebdon CBE was responding to Home Secretary Theresa May’s plans to reform visas for international students coming to the UK.
Speaking as chair of university think-tank million+, Professor Ebdon said: “The decision to keep open pathway courses and maintain opportunities to work in the UK once students graduate will be welcomed by universities and by students thinking of studying in the UK.
“There is no dispute that the accreditation of private colleges should be improved. It is disappointing that the Home Secretary has stated that she expects international student numbers to fall but this is only an assessment and this announcement is a clear signal that the UK is still open for business.
“International students play a key role in the economy and here at Bedfordshire, they contribute millions of pounds to the local economy.
“The clarification that there will be no restrictive number cap on international students will help universities promote Britain as a destination of choice for non-EU students and support much-needed economic growth.”
