The University’s partner, the British School of Osteopathy (BSO), is celebrating after its Vice Principal (Research and Quality) Steven Vogel scooped the 2011 CAM Outstanding Contribution to the Community award.
He was presented with the award at a ceremony organised by CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) magazine and sponsored by Biocare.
Steven heads the BSO’s pioneering research team which is working to further develop the evidence base for osteopathy. He is leading the large, funded study entitled Investigating osteopaths’ attitudes to managing and assessing risk in clinical settings and adult patient’ experiences and responses to osteopathic treatment, also known as the Clinical Risk Osteopathy and Management (CROaM) study, which is being conducted by the BSO and other partners.
The study began in August 2009 and is due to be completed this August.
In 2009 Steven was one of the members of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) Guideline Development Group which worked to formulate guidelines on the treatment of back pain, the biggest cause of work-related absence in the UK.
Steven said: “I am honoured to have been given this award. The temptation is to focus continually on what osteopathy as a profession still needs to do, but it has been satisfying to stop and reflect on my work over the past 20 years. It has been a pleasure to combine my research and education work at the BSO with being an osteopath in an NHS general practice in south west London for many years.”
BSO Principal and Chief Executive Charles Hunt added: “Steven has been tireless in incorporating osteopathy into the mainstream health care arena, and we’re delighted to see his work recognised by this award.”
The BSO is the UK’s oldest and largest school of osteopathy.
