Biomedical Science students at Barcelona conference

A quartet of final year Biomedical Science students from the University of Bedfordshire had their research work displayed at a prestigious international conference in Spain.

Dr Bushra Ahmed, Principal Lecturer in Biochemistry, attended AD/PD 2011 – the five-day 10th international conference on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases held in Barcelona earlier this month. She was one of 3,000 experts and interested parties from all over the world who attended.

Her four final year research project students – Claudia Martins, Martyn Howard, Takara Shorter and Qasim Abdul-Azim – had a poster displayed for others to view as part of their research project on Parkinson’s disease and stem cells. It also featured the work of Bushra and an American student, Omair Hasnain.

Bushra said: “The students are very excited to hear that their work has been published. It’s great that they’re our undergraduate students and are still studying with us.

“It’s motivating and inspiring for the students when they realise it can help with their future careers. Some of them are interested to carry on with this and do further research on stem cells and Parkinson’s as a result.

“This conference is on a particular topic and all the experts in the world attend. It’s good to meet with people and get a collaborative approach to research. It’s a good exchange of ideas and really valuable.”

Bushra also recently went to Bedford Modern School to talk to A-Level students about the importance of chemistry, her recent experiences and research as part of the National Science and Engineering Week.
