The University of Bedfordshire hosted the fifth annual joint seminar with the English-Speaking Union (ESU) at its Putteridge Bury campus.
This year Dame Denise Platt DBE was the distinguished speaker at the event run jointly by the University and the ESU.
Dame Denise spoke on Social care for adults – a new settlement between individual, family and state to more than 70 ESU members, staff from the University and other visitors. Baroness Howells, Chancellor of the University, was also among the guests at the event.
Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE welcomed guests and said: “We’re delighted that the University’s partnership with the ESU is as strong as ever and we are honoured to have Dame Platt as our speaker.”
Dame Denise has had a long and notable government career in social care. For six years she was Chief Inspector of the Social Services Inspectorate, which she followed by five years as chair of the Commission for Social Care Inspection.

Awarded the DBE in 2004, she was named public servant of the year in 2008. She is also an Independent Governor at the University.
The event was organised by Dr Tony Wood, Chairman of the Ouse Valley Branch of the ESU, and the founding Vice Chancellor of the University. He said: “Having Dame Denise come to speak to us has continued the tradition of attracting some of our most eminent national speakers to these prestigious joint seminars.”
The ESU is an international education charity founded in 1918 to promote “international understanding and friendship through the use of the English language.”
