Dr Jones, a qualified GP and regular health adviser on television and radio, will be giving a special lecture on Medicine and the Media on Thursday, 16 June at 7pm.

He will be sharing the platform with the University’s research expert Professor Gurch Randhawa, Professor of Diversity in Public Health and Director of the Institute for Health Research, who will be speaking about organ donation.

Universities Week kicks off on Monday, 13 June and is a national campaign that aims to showcase universities and demonstrate how everyone benefits from the work they do. Different areas of higher education will be showcased during the week, the theme of which is What’s the Big Idea?

Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE said: "I am delighted to support this campaign. Higher education is much more than just teaching and learning. Here at Bedfordshire we have a strong story to tell.

"We have a growing global reputation which is attracting more and more students and contribute some £300m to the local economy.

“We are known for our high quality teaching, excellent employability record, world-class research, strong student support and outstanding facilities.

"We transform lives and this campaign is an opportunity to celebrate our success stories."

Dr Jones has written several books and is a great advocate of the health benefits of physical fitness. He has run several marathons and swum across Lake Windermere as part of his fitness schedule.
