A University of Bedfordshire international expert in diabetes and geriatrics has secured a grant of nearly €6m in a bid to help older people with diabetes.
Professor Sinclair is Director at the Institute of Diabetes for Older People (IDOP) at the University and Dean of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Postgraduate Medical School based at the Putteridge Bury campus.
The project, called Mid-Frail, is co-led by Professor Sinclair and Dr Leocadio R. Manãs, a distinguished geriatrician and diabetologist in Madrid, Spain.
The Mid-Frail project involves a large EU-wide randomised control trial in older people with diabetes using an intervention consisting of intensive medical care and an exercise and nutrition programme.
A number of basic science sub-studies will be connected to the Mid-Frail project and recruitment for the research will start in early 2012.
The project has been awarded the funding from the European Commission FP7, (the seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development), and is subject to final negotiations. It will involve research centres across Europe.
FP7 is a seven year programme with more than €50 billion to be allocated on a variety of EU research.
Professor Sinclair will also co-ordinate the training for participating centres. He said: “Diabetes in older people is a serious and increasingly common condition and associated with considerable morbidity, mortality, care-home residency and excessive health care costs.
“We are thrilled to have been awarded this funding for IDOP – it establishes us as a leader in developing high-quality diabetes care and gives us a major boost in enhancing the health and well-being of all older people with diabetes.”
Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE said: “I am delighted that Professor Alan Sinclair and IDOP have secured this highly prestigious award.”
IDOP is the first institute of its kind to be devoted to enhancing the care of older people with diabetes and has already received funding from the Government for a national initiative in this area.
