The University of Bedfordshire’s Students’ Union (USBU) hosted an awards ceremony to honour student volunteers that play an outstanding role in the local community.
The packed event celebrated the achievements and success of the various student clubs and societies, course representatives and student officers as well as student volunteers. There were nearly 40 nominations for the volunteer awards alone.
The evening was jointly organised by the USBU and the University’s Careers and Employment Service and was held in the UBSU’s award-winning Mezzanine Bar in the new Campus Centre in Luton.

University Registrar Alice Hynes was on hand to present certificates. She said: “It was a fantastic occasion – it was hard to choose winners from such a talented group. The evening was not just about personal transformation, but also how our students have transformed the lives of those in our community. We’re very proud of them.”
Dishon Arivanandham, Vice President (Democracy and Diversity) of the Students’ Union added: “It was important to be able to recognise the students’ achievements and to pay tribute to the extra lengths they go to. They’ve all done a brilliant job.”

Volunteer Gold awards went to Rakesh Lewis, Bharath Satish Lawrence and Lokesh Mani, who helped a humanitarian education project for the British Red Cross, Abdullah Abiodun Mohammed who volunteered with the Bedfordshire African Community Centre (BACC) and Mainaji Esther Solomon who worked with the Creative Consultants team at Luton Culture Museums.
The other two Gold awards went to Ezenwa Ukeie for his work on the SOS Bus Luton (part of the Safer Luton Partnership) and Sabath Shazia for her fundraising efforts for charity Hear My Voice. Sabath is on a winning streak after recently receiving the ‘Adult Achiever’ award in Luton’s Best 2010 awards.

Director of Noah Enterprise Jim O’Connor, presented the Gold awards and said: “I am really impressed with the extent of volunteering here – I had no idea just how many students are doing fantastic work in the community.”
An after-party and performances from the Singing and Dancing Society and the Student Volunteer Society followed the presentation.
