Uni backs Britain's biggest one-day carnival

The University of Bedfordshire is sponsoring Britain’s biggest one-day carnival on bank holiday Monday so get your dancing shoes on, your whistles ready and get ready to party.

Luton International Carnival kicks off the UK’s carnival season on Monday, 30 May from 12 noon to 7pm and is expected to draw a crowd of some 100,000 people.

Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE said: “We are delighted and proud to be a Gold sponsor of this fantastic event which is an opportunity to show what Luton has to offer.”

From sea horses and Greek goddesses to Ghanaian warriors and Olympic rings, the highlight of the day will be the spectacular carnival parade which will see up to 2,000 people create an eye-catching, breathtaking procession through the town centre.

There are 71 entries for this year’s parade from local schools, community groups, companies and charities representing an international mix of music, art and culture taking part in the vibrant and colourful procession.

The Carnival parade sets up at Wardown Park before leaving at 1:30pm from New Bedford Road - Hucklesby Way - Old Bedford Road - Guildford Street - Cheapside - Silver Street - Library Road - Bridge Street - Manchester Street - Town Hall - Upper George Street - Alma Street - New Bedford road - ending at Wardown Park.

Headlining this year will be 80s’ pop sensations The Boomtown Rats along with a number of local talented artists including Loz Jones, CC Smugglers, Soul Rhymaz, Provoke, Clara Byrne, Sean Stevens, Golden Cruiser, Aisling O’Reilly, Nina Khadija, Natalie Chua, The Knockouts, The Amigos and Pearl Handled Revolver.

There will also be a special youth stage at Telford Way car park with a day of entertainment aimed at young people with a full programme of locally-based DJs and MCs.

The carnival features ten further sound sites arranged by the Luton Sounds Forum, plus a mix of craft, fundraising and trade stalls, located in Wardown Park, The Moor and St George’s Square, as well as amusements, attractions and rides.
