Bedfordshire and Luton Schools’ Combined Athletics Championships - Year Four PE students

Student PE teachers from the University of Bedfordshire gained invaluable experience by organising a county-wide schools athletics event.

The students helped stage the annual Bedfordshire and Luton Schools’ Combined Athletics Championships once more at the Bedford International Athletics stadium.

Mark Bowler, a Senior Lecturer in Physical Education at the University, took care of the pre-event organisation before the students took control on the day.

He said: “The event was a great success and the students worked really hard to make sure it ran smoothly. It is fantastic experience for them to run such an important event and I was pleased with their professionalism and enthusiasm.”

More than 50 Year Three and Year Four PE student teachers were involved with all aspects of organisation including officiating, inputting data/recording, announcing, refereeing, timekeeping and place judging.

As well as an individual competition for boys and girls at junior and intermediate level, there was a team competition in which the aggregate scores of the top three athletes from each school counted.
