Football-crazy student Lauren Impey is living proof that a small initial investment can reap handsome rewards.
The 21-year-old Sport Science and Coaching final-year student from the University of Bedfordshire is now poised for the chance of a lifetime in the Champions League Final at Wembley this month (May).
Lauren has beaten off the challenge of 460 applicants to head the volunteering team at Europe’s showpiece soccer event in London on Saturday, 28 May. She has recently started her new role at Wembley Stadium.
This is just the start of a hectic summer schedule which will see Lauren take her final exams and then graduate from the Bedford campus in July.
After the possibility of going to the World University Games in China, she will be jetting off to the United States at the end of August on an all-expenses paid soccer scholarship as she starts her two-year Masters course in Sport Management at Lynn University in Florida.
The centre-back from Northampton, who plays for the Leicester City women’s team, represented Great Britain Universities in the last World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia, two years ago.
Lauren said: “I feel that football has saved my life and I’ve also got people around me who’ve helped me. I also have to credit myself in that I’ve been strong and not allowed myself to follow the crowd.”
Lauren, who is Student Sports Officer at the Bedford campus, benefited from a University bursary in each of her three years of study.
Lauren added: “Thanks to the University, the bursary scheme has had a really positive impact on my studies and life ambitions. The bursary has helped fund my travel costs to Leicester for games and training. It’s also helped buy my equipment such as boots and shin pads. It’s meant I could concentrate on my studies, which I take seriously, rather than having to work as well.”
