Business Minister Mark Prisk had his first meeting with the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP).
The Minister of State for Business and Enterprise met interim board members, including University of Bedfordshire Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE, at Bedford i-lab to hear about the partnership’s plans for appointing its board and the main objectives and priorities it hopes to address.
During his roundtable with the partnership and local business leaders, they discussed how they would drive growth in the local economy.
The partnership covers Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton, Milton Keynes, Aylesbury Vale, Cherwell, Dacorum, Northampton, Corby, Daventry, Kettering and South Northamptonshire.
Chair of the Interim Board Brian Hibbert CBE said: “This was a very positive meeting and the Minister recognised the importance of SEMLEP to the development of the overall UK economy based on its sector strengths, two million population, central location and national and international transport links.”
The Business Minister pointed out a number of initiatives the Government is implementing which will support the SEMLEP programme including Red Tape, Coaching for Growth and the Start-Up Enterprise allowance.
The Board raised several
other issues including the importance of housing development, the difficulties
of East West transport routes and some of the barriers to short term
development put in place by other Government Departments.
