Local Access students enjoy the Open Day

Fri 11th November, 2011

The University of Bedfordshire welcomed more than 100 students to a special open day for Access students at its Bedford campus.

Access students are those who take a less traditional route into higher education – some have to retake certain qualifications and many are mature students.

Students came from Bedford College, North Hertfordshire College, Central Bedfordshire College (Dunstable) and Barnfield College (Luton), all partner colleges of the University.

The event included talks on understanding the process of application, how to write a personal statement and the financial implications of undertaking further study. Visitors also had the chance to talk to current students who came in as Access students and chat to academics on a one-to-one basis.

Tutor Julie Savage from North Hertfordshire College said: “The whole idea of a day especially for access students is brilliant. There’s a different focus and it was really well received. All our students worry about going to university. But coming together with other access students show they’re not alone.”

Cheryl Swallow, another tutor from North Hertfordshire College added: “It was oversubscribed at our end and we would definitely support it being held annually. The fact that it is tailored to the Access students specifically really helps break down barriers in higher education.”

Students from Bedford College agreed. They said: “It has been really interesting. We feel much more in sync with other students because everyone is in the same boat. The day was clear and the talks were upbeat.”

Lal Joshi, Head of Student Recuitment, said: “We felt it was really important for us to organise a bespoke event for the Access students at some of our local partner colleges. We want them to understand the process and we’ve had some really positive feedback.

“We want to be clear about the process, the financial commitment and what they need to do next to achieve their goals.”
