University of Bedfordshire nursing practice educator Linda Dean has just won the Norah Rees Award 2011 for her Masters’ dissertation. The award, now in its fourth year, recognises and promotes research and development in child healthcare.

The charity Action for Sick Children uses a legacy to present the Norah Rees Award for the best Masters’ dissertation that furthers the aims and values of the charity. The review panel was made up of a paediatrician, nurses, a therapist, a parent of a child with a long term condition and members of the charity.

Action for Sick Children is the UK’s leading children’s healthcare charity, formed to ensure that sick children always receive the highest standard of care.

Linda said: “I’m really happy to receive this award - I genuinely didn’t expect to win so getting the letter was such a lovely surprise! The dissertation was hard work but definitely worth it.”

The Norah Rees prize of £500 is awarded to the best Masters’ dissertation by a nurse or healthcare professional. Linda’s dissertation was called 'An exploration of the experiences of young people who have been nursed on adult wards' and was chosen as the winning piece of research.

Linda’s supervisor Dr Sharon Black said: “Just being nominated for the award was a great achievement, but winning it is such an accomplishment. I would like to congratulate her on this success – we are very proud of her.”

The Norah Rees Award was presented by Professor Al Aynsley-Green, the first Children’s Commissioner for England, at the Action for Sick Children Annual General Meeting.
