Bursaries worth thousands of pounds were awarded to deserving students from the University of Bedfordshire at a special ceremony.

Twenty five third year students each received a £1,000 award from the University to help them in their final year of study. Such awards were funded from a grant received from The Steel Charitable Trust.

The Steel Charitable Trust is a grant-making charity established in 1976 by the late Robert and Marjorie Steel, who had lived in Luton all their lives. The Trust makes grants in all charitable areas, including education.

Nicholas Wright, Chair of the Trustees of the Trust, said: “We have been funding such bursaries to students at the University of Bedfordshire for the last five years and are always encouraged by the success of those who receive our awards. We wish this year’s recipients every success for their final year and the years to come.”

Sports Studies student Megan Lugg from Bedford said: “I really enjoyed the day. I will use the money to buy extra course books and equipment. I can now prepare for my exams after Christmas and hopefully will get good marks.”

Sport & Physical Education student Nick Willis from Ampthill said: “Without this money I would have to look for a part-time job, which would mean I wouldn’t have time to do my assignments properly.”

Media Production student Mark Lewis from Kempston, said: “I am really happy to receive this award. I will invest the money in media film projects for my course.”

Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE DL said: “We are grateful for the support of The Steel Charitable Trust. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the trustees and highlight how valuable these bursaries are for those students who seek to transform their lives.”
