Two Media graduates from the University of Bedfordshire have found success with their creative agency, Clearhead.

Alex Lawrence and Gavin O’Brien set up Clearhead after graduating from University in 2009 and since then, the company has gone from strength to strength, with work continuing to come in thick and fast.

Gavin, who is the company’s business director, said: “We’ve gone from working in our bedrooms to having our own studio space in the Hat Factory. Starting with just the two of us, we now have a team of 12 people and run an internship scheme with the University.”

The dynamic duo have produced several promotional videos for the University, as well as other education institutions in the town and surrounding counties. They have since branched into the world of advertising, producing films for the high street fashion retailer Republic and large energy drink brands such us Relentless and Lucozade.

They are moving into other creative areas and offering their clients services such as mobile app design and development, design, print, branding and website design.

Alex, who is Clearhead’s Creative Director studied Media Production at the University and said: “After working in the film and television industry during my time at University I had no doubt that there was an opportunity for us even in a recession to create original, creative work on our own terms and start our own company.”

More recently, the pair has joined forces with BBC Worldwide, producing programme promos that air around the world for shows such as Dancing with the Stars and the children’s channel, CBeebies.

Gavin, who studied Media Production and Business Administration, believes that it was hard work, support from the University and good teaching that has led to their success.

“If you want to get on in life and make a name for yourself you have to work hard. The University has always been very supportive to us. We want to give something back, and more importantly, give back something that is of good quality.”

Clearhead has plans to open an editing suite in the next few weeks, which students from the University will be able to use.
