The Government should launch a campaign in 2012 to ensure that mature students understand the opportunities available to them, according to the University of Bedfordshire’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon CBE DL.
Figures have been released by UCAS (University and College Admissions Service) showing that applications to study at university in 2012 have declined compared to the same period in 2011.
Speaking as Chair of million+, Professor Ebdon said: “Universities are working hard to ensure that students understand that studying for the degree you need to get the job you want remains one of the best career moves that you can make, especially in uncertain economic times.”
Figures reveal the steepest downturn in applications is to be from mature students, say million+.
Professor Ebdon explained: “One in four first time undergraduates is a mature student. Many study later because they realise that they have missed out on the life-changing employment and learning opportunities that studying for a degree offers.
“No-one should lose the chance to be what they might have been. Ministers need to up their game and should launch a campaign in the New Year to ensure that older students understand the new loan system and the opportunities available.”
The University has launched its own campaign to find local life-changing success stories. The innovative viral campaign features storybooks which include tales from some of the University’s graduates.
Deputy Director of Marketing, Faye Scadden, said: “It’s about looking at and acknowledging those people and places in our lives that have influenced us most. There’s a dedicated microsite and Facebook page for people to tell us about their experiences.”
