New University Chaplaincy sets down strong roots

University of Bedfordshire's Chaplaincy Opening

Tue 8th November, 2011

Local faith leaders met with MP Gavin Shuker and the Rt Rev Richard Innwood, Bishop of Bedford, at the official opening of the University’s new Chaplaincy in Luton.

The Chaplaincy, known as the Tree House, was formally opened and blessed by Bishop Richard who said: “This is a fantastic occasion to open these wonderful facilities. It’s great to see what has been achieved here – a first class space.”

Opened by University Registrar Alice Hynes with Tim Stone, Director of Learning Resources, the event was attended by more than 50 people, including representatives from Churches Together in Luton and the Luton Council of Faiths. Alice said: “It was a very special occasion to mark the beginning of this very special place.”

Representatives from different faiths offered readings of the ‘Golden Rule’ – shared beliefs in love and justice. The building was then blessed in a traditional Christian way by Bishop Richard.

As part of the University’s £180m investment in facilities, the Tree House has relocated to new purpose-built premises on the ground floor of the Business School. It boasts two multi-faith Prayer and Quiet Rooms available for staff and students, along with adjacent space for Jumm’ah and larger events for University members. It also has Wudu washing facilities for Muslim students and staff and a kitchen.

Luton’s Chaplain, Reverend Andrew Goodman, said: “The people who gathered together gave the opening a truly beautiful atmosphere. The place has been completely transformed into a really exciting space to feel welcomed and relaxed in.

“We’re a diverse campus and the Tree House students and staff, along with SeedBeds in Bedford, help bring people together while celebrating that diversity.”

The Tree House hosts a series of special events throughout the year including film nights, discussions on a range of topics, and popular get-togethers where visitors can sample food from different parts of the world.
