Star names from the worlds of music and cinema joined hundreds of graduates from the University of Bedfordshire at ceremonies in Luton this week (16 to 18 Nov).
Duran Duran keyboard player Nick Rhodes was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Arts for his contribution to the music industry as a songwriter, producer and performer.
He said: “I am very happy to receive this award – I did not expect it at all. My advice for graduates is that if you have a dream, stick with it and try to make it work for as long as you can. It is very gratifying when you succeed.”
Music producer Peter Asher and film producer Katy Haber were each awarded an Honorary Doctor of Arts. Katy Haber, who began her film career in England working with iconic director Sam Peckinpah on Straw Dogs and co-produced sci-fi classic Blade Runner, was recognised for her outstanding career in the film industry.
Producer Peter Asher was recognised for his distinguished career in the music industry, working with the likes of global stars Cher and Neil Diamond.
Also honoured were Dr Yasmin Jetha, Professor Dame Carol Black and Colonel Colin Mason CBE.
Dr Jetha was awarded an Honorary Fellow in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the University. Professor Black was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science for her contribution to medicine. Colonel Mason was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration for his outstanding contribution to Bedfordshire.
They joined graduates from the Faculty of Creative Arts, Technologies and Science, The Business School and the Health and Social Sciences Faculty at the ceremonies.
The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon CBE DL, said: “This is the time when we celebrate the success of our students. I feel privileged and proud to recognise their achievements. I wish them every success in the future and I congratulate every single one of them.”
