Thu 3rd November, 2011

Media Performance students about to graduate took helpful tips from actress and director Jo McInnes at a masterclass at the University.

Jo shared tips with the third year students on preparing for auditions and getting work in a competitive job market, of which she has a wealth of experience from working on The Bill and Spooks.

Jo said: “I try and make them feel confident when they are stepping out into the world and looking for new careers. I try to give them the tools they need for preparing for auditions and looking for work. It went really well; I enjoyed doing it last year. I find them very open to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in which is great to see.”

Feedback from the students who attended reflected the value of the masterclass. Jonathan Owen-Thomas said: “It was really great because Jo has a lot of experience of working as an actress and director in theatre. She also managed to give us great advice on how to get your foot in the door when it comes to the theatre industry.”

Anthony Williams said: I learnt what techniques I have to use as an actor or even a presenter. I tend to sometimes forget what I am feeling. It really does have to come deep from within. She taught me that very well. She also taught me the tools I can use in auditions which I am very grateful about.”

Jo worked with students from all levels throughout her visit and all found her expertise beneficial. Course Leader Maria Wiener said: “Not only was Jo's masterclass very beneficial for our students, as they could practice and enhance their skills and confidence, but also they enjoyed it and learned quite a few good tips in preparation for their future auditions. Jo was wonderful with them and certainly formed an invaluable source of inspiration for them.”
