University of Bedfordshire apprentice Jonathan Farmer has been shortlisted for Apprentice of the Year in Bedfordshire and Luton’s 2011 Rising Stars Business Excellence Awards.
Eighteen year old Flitwick lad Jonathan works in the Registry office of the University’s Bedford campus and was nominated for the award by his line manager, Jenny James, and Jacque Holmes, Deputy Faculty Manager of the Education, Sport and Tourism Faculty.
The Apprentice of the Year is a new category this year to highlight the contribution apprentices bring to their host companies and the wider economy.
Jonathan didn’t know he had been nominated and was delighted when he was told he had been shortlisted. He said: “I was shocked to find out I’d been nominated, let alone shortlisted! It’s a great feeling and I’m really happy that I’ve left such a good impression.”
Jacque Holmes explained: “Jonathan completely epitomises the ethos of apprenticeships – he is an active member of the team, making a valuable contribution to the University and always has a smile on his face.
“He is diligent, capable and maintains very high standards in his work. We think he’s grown immensely over the last year and we see him as a real asset to the University and a shining beacon for the success of apprenticeships.”
Jenny added: “We’re very proud of Jonathan. He’s professional, polite and willing to get stuck in - he really displays maturity that belies his years.”
Jonathan took part in four placements in his apprenticeship programme at the University before deciding to continue in the Registry Office. He said: “I did an apprenticeship because learning on the job would make me more employable. I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved and this nomination means a lot to me and my family.”
The awards take place on 10 November at the Park Inn in Bedford. Jonathan hopes to be able to continue working at the University once his apprenticeship programme ends next year.
