The University recently joined local councillors, voluntary organisations, Luton Council of Faiths and Grass Roots, to mark the launch of Luton: A Fairtrade Town.

Some 160 people attended the launch at Luton Town Hall, where special guest, Harriet Lamb CBE, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation, announced that Luton has been awarded Fairtrade Town status.

The University and University of Bedfordshire Students’ Union (UBSU) are members of the Luton Fairtrade Steering Group and attended the launch.

The University’s Energy and Environment Manager, Adam Higgin, presented a cheque to Harriet Lamb, as part of the University’s ongoing commitment to the work of the Fairtrade Foundation.

The University is currently making a joint application for University Fairtrade Status, along with UBSU and Sodexo, which manages catering outlets across the University’s campuses.

Adam said: “The University is proud to support the Fairtrade Foundation and is delighted Luton has achieved Fairtrade town status. This accolade has been eight-years in the making and testimony to the hard work of many people across Luton promoting Fairtrade as a fair deal for people in the developing world.

“UBSU and Sodexo already supply a wide range of Fairtrade food and drinks at their cafes at the University. The University is investigating further ways it can support Fairtrade products, for instance through its procurement policy.”

The University will be actively supporting Fairtrade Fortnight, which takes place in February 2012.
