The University of Bedfordshire has been recognised for its commitment to supporting job applicants who are disabled.

It has also been recognised for supporting the career development of employees who are disabled.

Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE DL recently welcomed Teresa Chammings, District Manager and Marilyn Orridge, Disability Employment Adviser from Jobcentre Plus Luton to the University’s Luton campus.

The scheme, called Positive About Disabled People, is identified by the two-ticks logo. The University successfully applied for accreditation to the scheme earlier this year and now proudly displays the two-ticks logo on its website and job adverts.

Professor Ebdon said: “I’m very proud that our University has become a member of the scheme. It demonstrates the University’s commitment to encourage all our staff to work to the best of their abilities.”

Teresa Chammings, Jobcentre Plus District Manager for Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, said: “I’m delighted the University has become a Positive About Disabled People scheme member. The University is demonstrating it has a positive attitude towards job applications from disabled people and is encouraging disabled employees to develop their careers. I hope their good practice becomes an example for other organisations to follow.”

Employers who use the disability symbol make five commitments regarding recruitment, training, retention, consultation and disability awareness.

These commitments are:

  • to interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and to consider them on their abilities,
  • to discuss with disabled employees, at any time but at least once a year, what both parties can do to make sure disabled employees can develop and use their abilities ,
  • to make every effort when employees become disabled to make sure they stay in employment,
  • to take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness needed to make these commitments work,
  • to review these commitments each year and assess what has been achieved, plan ways to improve on them and inform employees about progress and future plans.
