Bedfordshire student Katherine Glyde has been picking up tips from the top during an internship with Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
Katherine first volunteered as a steward for the summer season at the Globe. So, when she saw an internship advertised there she jumped at the chance. After a thorough interview process, Katherine was offered an internship for six weeks over the summer supporting the theatre department.
The work was varied, with Katherine getting involved in casting, theatre management and finance. She said: “It was so interesting to work on everything involved in putting on a play, even down to the budget. The team was amazing – there was a real family feel which I hadn’t expected – and they took my opinions on board.
“I was able to sit in on pre performance read-throughs, help to organise photo-shoots for the actors, and I even set up a research project for the actors taking part in an Anne Boleyn production which helped them build their characters.
“It’s so magical to see Shakespeare performed in the Globe and it has given me a breadth of experience that will really help in the future.”
Next year, Katherine will be ahead of the game as part of her contemporary theatre practice course in is to do a project on managing a theatre. She said: “I can’t wait to get back and use everything that I’ve learnt. It was so inspiring to see how my project would actually work in the real world.”
“The course is great and I get to learn so many different things. Bedfordshire seems to be the only place to become a theatre practitioner, rather than just an actor.”
Katherine impressed the team at the Globe so much that she was involved with the final planning stages of the International Actors’ Fellowship which started in August. Twelve international actors from all over the world are undertaking an intensive course to learn how the Globe produces a play.
She said: “It was really exciting to be part of the organisation of the Fellowship. The Fellowship happens at the busiest point in the season so I got to experience how the team organize this huge event as well as continuing the season of shows.”
Fiona Moorhead, Assistant to the Artistic Director at the Globe, said: “We’ve really enjoyed having Katherine; she has contributed enormously and worked terribly hard for the last six weeks. Picking up the pace of the department at this point in the season is no easy task and yet she has thrown herself into it wholeheartedly.
“I’m sure that we will continue to maintain a relationship with Katherine as she continues as a volunteer steward at the Globe. I just hope that she has enjoyed being with us as much as we have appreciated having her here.”
