Gareth Brierley and the Media Performance students

Budding actors and actresses from the University of Bedfordshire took tips from a master when they attended a performance workshop.

Gareth Brierley, a writer and performer from London theatre company The People Show, visited the third year Media Performance students and led a practical workshop about generating material for performances.

Gareth said: “The master class aims to give students the tools to make material that can be taken forward into a complete performance. The group was very good; I know a few of them from last year.”

Course leader Dr Maria Wiener said: “The students seemed to really enjoy this master class. They were able to engage in numerous creative ways and there was a lot of laughter from both ends. Gareth also enjoyed working with them and claimed that their performing level is really good and that they came up with some great ideas.”

Feedback from the students was encouraging. Miechiel Thompson said: “I really enjoyed the masterclass with Gareth because we didn't just sit there and listen to what he was saying. We got up and did a lot of practical work.” Another student, Omotunde Adesina, said: “I felt the masterclass was a great experience, it felt like an acting laboratory, where we can experiment with different improvisation methods.”

Gareth led a similar workshop last year. He said: “I love doing it and have been doing it for years. It’s good to see that you get very different results each time.”
