Bursaries worth thousands of pounds have helped deserving students from the University of Bedfordshire achieve their goals.

A total of 25 students in their third year each received a £1,000 award from the Steel Charitable Trust, which helped them graduate this year with top marks.

The Steel Charitable Trust is a grant-making charity established in 1976 by the late Robert and Marjorie Steel, who had lived in Luton all their lives. The Trust makes grants in all charitable areas, including education.

Seven out of the 25 students achieved first class awards and 16 scooped upper seconds.

Anna Ogurekova (pictured above), who achieved a First in Business Studies, said: “I need to commit a lot of time to my studies in my final year. I was working part-time and had to work overtime to pay my bills. The bursary meant I could work minimum hours and concentrate on my work.”

Nicholas Wright, Chair of the Trustees of the Trust, said: “The Trust continues its commitment to the University in providing such bursaries for the fourth year and is delighted that the students have demonstrated their commitment to complete their studies and have achieved such high standards.”

Another 25 students will be supported by the Trust this year. They will be awarded their bursaries at a special event on Tuesday, 22 November. All beneficiaries of awards made by the Trust over the last four years will be invited to a reunion event at the University in 2013.
