The University of Bedfordshire’s Student Recruitment Team has launched a new schools and colleges initiative in a bid to prepare sixth-formers for university life.
They have been talking to hundreds of students in the county about moving on to university in 2012.
The Team has been visiting schools and colleges, meeting final-year sixth-formers, to help them make informed choices about their futures, whether they are preparing for a place at university or for employment.
Head of Student Recruitment Lal Joshi said: “The changes in university tuition fees from next year has created a more complicated picture for students. The prospect of £9,000 annual fees may put some people off from applying to university. A key part of the team’s presentation is to ensure sixth-formers have all the right information when making their choices.”
He recently spoke to several tutor groups at Luton Sixth Form College. Student Nadia Shah said: “I’m not put off by the higher cost. I know that I don’t have to pay the loan back until I graduate and start earning at least £21,000 a year.”
Student Stephanie Collen added: “The changes might even help me get a place at my first choice university, if other people are put off by the higher fees.”
Luton Sixth Form College’s tutors Butch Fazal and Tamsyn Kramer valued the Recruitment Team’s visits.
Butch said: “Luton Sixth Form College does much to help inform students of their options, whether they choose to go onto further study or the world of work. I welcome the University’s regular visits to help support these messages, enabling each student to make the right choices for them.”
Tamsyn added: “The visits have been informative, helpful and have really hit home. The students are all now doing much more focused searches for courses on UCAS and are looking into going to university open days too.”
