University of Bedfordshire Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE DL has welcomed the recognition that teaching funding for universities is important and should be restored.
Speaking as chair of the University think-tank million+, Professor Ebdon was responding to the announcement by the Labour leader Ed Miliband that Labour would have restored university teaching funding and limited university fees to a maximum £6,000 in 2012
Speaking ahead of the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, Professor Ebdon said: "I welcome the recognition that teaching funding for universities is important and should be restored. The withdrawal of 80 per cent of teaching funding from September 2012 means that many university undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses will no longer receive any public funding at all and this is the primary reason why fees will increase significantly in 2012.
“Labour will have to be clear where it finally stands prior to the next election but the 1997 Dearing Report recognised that universities should be funded by contributions from the state, graduates and business. These proposals are an important first step in recognising that it is not only graduates who have a role to play in funding universities."
