A new media journal edited by a University of Bedfordshire academic has awarded a prestigious prize to a journalist researching how social media is used in local press.

The SAGE - Convergence prize was given by Convergence, a journal that focuses on new media technologies, edited jointly by Professor Alexis Weedon from the University of Bedfordshire and Professor Julia Knight from the University of Sunderland.

Lily Canter, a journalist who works as a lecturer at De Montfort University while studying for a PhD at the University of Sheffield, was awarded the prize.

Professor Weedon said: “We have always supported early career researchers - who have on many occasions been leaders in research into the newest of media technologies – and over the years have seen careers grow of those who have published with us. This prize is a way of marking this.”

Lily said: “I was delighted to win this award. It was a bit of a shock because it was the first time I had entered such a challenge. It has given me greater confidence to write more papers like this.”

Lily’s paper, The interactive spectrum: the use of social media in UK regional newspapers, is a case study of the Leicester Mercury and Bournemouth Daily Echo newspapers, exploring how their journalists use social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

Lily was awarded her prize at the Media, Communication and Cultural Studies Association (MeCCSA) conference held at the University of Bedfordshire.
